Chiropractor Near Me

How to choose a chiropractor
in Cheyenne WY

Chiropractor Cheyenne WY Dr Dean Lehmkuhler

I get it. Choosing a chiropractor in Cheyenne can be very difficult.

To borrow a line from Forrest Gump, chiropractors are “like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” Chiropractors in Cheyenne WY, and elsewhere, vary widely in their type of practice, form of treatment, forms of payment, and how they view their role in the healthcare community.

That being said, with such an important decision, “Chiropractor Near Me” is still one of the most frequently searched phrases on Google when a person is looking for a new chiropractor in Cheyenne WY.

While convenience is certainly a factor, I’d encourage you to search a little deeper in order to find the best chiropractor for you.

By allowing Google to pick “chiropractor near me” you might end up with a person telling you “you have the spine of an 80 year old”... (Side Note: If you hear this, please walk out of said chiropractor’s office immediately!)

Or you might end up with a chiropractor pointing to unnecessary x-rays, explaining something in terms you don't understand, and then telling you you have “killer subluxations” and that you’ll likely need chiropractic care weekly for the rest of your life or your health will simply collapse and all will be lost…

Scare tactics, nocebo effects (the opposite of placebo), and “the hard sell” of excessive care plans are all signs you’re in the wrong chiropractic office.

These undesirable tactics are often used within "doctor-centered" practices where the strategies and policies are centered around the doctors interests. By contrast, a "patient-centered" office develops their treatment strategies and policies around what is in the best interests of the patient, aka, you.

Instead, here’s what you SHOULD be looking for in a patient-centered chiropractor.

  1. A detailed health and injury history combined with a thorough physical examination are the most important components to establishing a treatment plan. Rarely, x-ray or MRI are needed to evaluate back and neck pain. Time spent in evaluation can save a lot of time and money on treatment.
  2. Thorough explanation of your condition. You, the patient, spend a lot of time with you. You need to understand things that can help or hurt your progress. I find that removing harmful movements or positions can often bring about the fastest symptom relief for my patients.
  3. Reasonable goals and expectations are key to good outcomes. Thirty years of pain isn’t likely to be resolved with one treatment, but at the same time, a mild low back injury shouldn’t require months of intense treatment. Reasonable goals and expectations, for both the doctor and the patient, are necessary.
  4. Treatment should generally be comfortable and effective. Temporary discomfort can happen to even the best chiropractor-patient combination, but repeated pain with treatment or treatment that causes fear and anxiety for the patient, are signs of a poor doctor-patient relationship and should be avoided.
  5. The goal of treatment should always be to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit and achieve reasonable stability at this level. This may require exercise to stabilize and strengthen the injured area, and may even need a transition to “supportive care” in the form of less frequent treatment. When ongoing care is necessary, it should always be combined with exercise and self-care recommendations to maintain the progress that was accomplished through treatment. But, active treatment must end at some point, and it’s best to keep that in mind from the start.
